Thought it might be good idea to have a continuing report on the latest BIGs entering Transfer Portal. Today’s entries thus far …

Tegra Izray 6-10 265 Lasalle, redshirt Soph, Rivals 3Star

Elijah Farr 6-8 240, Murray St, 16pts a game in JUCO 20/21

per Verbal Commits

If the first one can rebound and take a pass then we have a candidate. What's wrong with the second?:-)

Five days later with the next semester approaching and no more BIGs have put their names in Transfer Portal. Slim pickings thus far. I suspect we will see a few in next couple of weeks.

01/10

6-10 275 RS FR Javarzia Belton leaving Southern Miss

No new BIGs, nada, have entered Transfer Portal in the last week. Semester break is over at majority of schools. Looks like Lobos will not get that mid-season transfer, ala Drew Gordon, this year.

A.J. Bramah. Excellent rebounder, and scorer, nice fg pct. and good FT shooter. Play him at the 4 and move Jevante to the 3. Doesn't solve the problem at the 5 but helps rebounding a lot and helps balance the scoring. Also frees up JJ more. I don't know if he's eligible to transfer in this strange season but worth looking into. Alford sent him packing but I think he's worth the risk, if eligible. If he doesn't work out, it's no big loss for this season. If he does, maybe we have him back next season, if he has any more eligibility (not sure). Just think...we could have KJ, JJ, and AJ!

AJ Bramah, a 6-7 guard, has not put his name in yet. Like many in the Portal, he has problems that must be considered outside of talent and ability.

I am confused as to how many times a player can transfer nowadays, especially if they are seniors that have already taken the COVID exception. I notice Vante Hendrix has his name in the Portal again. I know a player is allowed to transfer once without having to sit out. I am not totally clear if they have to sit out in subsequent transfers.

Suggestion on Recruit Development: Aside from seeking a couple of "big Boy Bangers" on the Portal, I'd like to see Forsling get a red0shirt season next year Bring Seck out and play along the lobos next year. The FOLLOWING YEAR WE SHOULD BE IN GOOD SHAPE for their JR. and  Sr seasons.  Pitino has a plan, He has always had good Centers on his teams.

The only Bigs in the transfer portal UNM should worry about are the ones that are not in there.

Sebastian Forsling and Birima Seck. The transfer portal is killing college athletics because when a school like New Mexico gets a transfer, you notice why they transferred. No disrespect to who we brought in here but not one transfer player is ready to be a MWC player of the year candidate (despite Mashburn and House being very good players) or even top two at their position in the conference. This program will be better by getting some quality people who buy into the program, the staff, the community and stay and develop. If you look back at the Alford era, Alex Kirk was a home grown four star recruit who stayed and developed. He along with Cameron Bairstow and AJ. Hardman stayed in the program and developed. The strength and conditioning and developing their game. Sebastian Forsling was not ready for San Diego State the other night. He's not ready but he is getting experience and learning quickly as to what work he needs to put in. If he stays and develops, he will be the rock on our front court and allow future Bigs to develop without the lack of production on the court (like it is now). Developing young talent is where it is at in at a school like New Mexico. The "power 5" transfers are most likely (not always) transferring for a reason.

This program has a bright future with players like Javonte Johnson and Sebastian and Birima. Hopefully Mashburn and House stay here happy and continue to develop themselves.

BTW, not great numbers, but if plays smart and no behavioral issues, could be a solid 1 year stop gap measure to provide some experience up front.  We need stability up front and experience.

Good point. While the goal is obviously getting some bigs that can both score and rebound (Tim Williams, Cam...) even having someone who can hold their own as an inside presence on the boards and defensively would be huge. Many a solid team has had a guy that did just that even he wasn't a major threat in other aspects of the game (ie a "garbage guy")

@bad-dawg That is exactly what I think works, 6'8 245 takes up space and has record of being effective.

The resemblance to RODDY is uncanny. He has a lot of offers from low mid-majors and D2 schools including Eastern NM.

The first year he was at Penn Wang showed a lot of skill. I thought he had all Ivy potential. Then injuries and COVID. Not sure what sidetracked him this year, but he could be a really good fit, if he is ready to go

***(01/19) Near double-double with 19 points, nine rebounds, three steals in win at New Mexico

(01/19) see Boxscore Penn vs UNM @ the PIT against a very good UNM Team at the time

Experienced Agile Bigman @ 6-9 225 Very strong, good hands good athletic ability and skills who can run the floor

Another Good fit imo

Eboigbodin 6-9, Wang 6-10, combined with Tovar 6-9 and Forsling at 6-11 has the potential to be a formidable Frontcourt--Experience-

Size and Depth

Two of the best Big options in the Portal at this time imo but as someone wisely said after April 1 the pool of players will expand

JARVIS OMERSA

6-6 / 235

This is one of RPs old players, was in one of his best recruiting classes at Minn.  High Energy like House, same body type as Roddy, not as skilled offensively.  He transferred out of Minn for Covid and now back in the portal.  Doesn't score much but with House, Mash, Tovar, probably wouldn't get the ball anyway. Scoring is not an issue with this roster, he does everything else.

No surprises here, if RP wants him, he knows what he's getting.

Transfer Portal is starting to churn as some players are announcing their departure and landing all at once. So far, there are no new BIGs making their intentions known. The season is winding down and that Portal is going to soon overflow.

Two JUCO bigs we should pursue: Wyatt Lowell of Snow College and Reggie Hill of Eastern Florida. Both tough on the glass.
