Thought we might like to keep this up in order to keep all of them in one place although posting a blip about them at the same time would be cool.

always of interest to me that these rating services don't really do much in the way of independent professional evaluations but rather primarily rely on who recruits these prospects.  In any event, thinks and it is interesting to learn who we are on early like this.

The 2021 kids may be gone by now, but all were still listed. Don't worry about the 2* kids, one of the recruits I counted 27 schools were interested. Carr, the only one from 2023 is a 1* , but since we have added him he must have some kind of potential:-)

I just found Brayden Applehans stats from the year and he averaged 51% from the 3. He wants to go to Kansas, but I have no idea if Kansas wants him. Lots of interest from lots of schools.

I don't place much value in stars except for 4 or 5's and then only that a lot of folks think they are pretty good. Two's are just about that the player knows how to play the game or that they haven't seen them and I hardly ever see a one and in Carr's case since we offered I figured someone had some good info.

Not impressed.

It's been exciting so far watching Pitino recruit a higher caliber of athletes for UNM through the Portal and Juco.  Now Pitino seems to be regressing and settling for a lesser caliber of athlete with his HS recruitment of mediocre prospects which makes No sense imo.

One of the complaints about Pitino while at Minnesota was he wasn't able to recruit 3* and 4* athletes and as a result Pitino's teams were unable to get past the "middle of the pack" in the Big Ten after 8 years as the HC. From the looks of what's posted here, maybe those were valid complaints by the local Minnesota fans.

Pitino should just stick with recruiting through the Portal until he has a couple of winning seasons under his belt and has UNM on track for a MWC Championship. This would give Pitino the opportunity to get grounded in the MWC and allow him the opportunity to continue to recruit experienced higher caliber of athletes to enable him to build a winning record which would drastically improve his HS recruitment potential.

If Pitino can turn UNM's program around by establishing winning records in his first year or two it would drastically enhance his recruiting capability which in turn would increase UNM's chances of returning to a Championship level program.

Good Competitive athletes, at any level, Do Not want to join a losing program!

If Pitino and his staff are going to revert to recruiting 2* athletes Pitino will be an instant replay and a repeat of Weirs failures and UNM fans will have to get used to living at the bottom half or maybe the middle of the pack of the MWC. If that happens UNM will be stuck in the mud of defeat and definitely lose the ability to recruit 3* and 4* athletes, not to mention much of their loyal fanbase.

You simply can't win Championships or keep butts in seats in any sport even in the MWC with mediocre athletes.

Recruiting a 1*prospect? and settling for 2* prospects... after Pitino stated he wants to return UNM to a Championship Level of Basketball? That makes plans for winning a Championship anytime soon or even in my lifetime a bad frickin joke.

If Pitino can't recruit higher quality athletes then a 1* or a mediocre 2* he should hire a top recruiter who can or the future of the program is already in jeopardy.

By the way, last season the Lobos didn't have one legitimate scoring threat from the three point line and yet Pitino hasn't recruited an experienced proven D-1 sharpshooter to fill that void. As of today UNM's current talented roster is without a proven elite type of scorer???

I don't look at what is listed from their stars in many cases. There are a number of these listed at 2* among those to be juniors that are definitely not 2* or less players: Carr, Uzan, Edmonds are definitely not 2*, Part of the problem is most of the rankings as a HS Soph are 2* until someone other than Verbal Commits picks them up. An example is Edmonds who is closer to a 4* from what I could find digging around. There other that are hidden behind the 4* kids. ESPN does a much better job of it, but the get closer to what the kids are this next year. The other thing I think is going on this year in particular is that the transfer portal has bee so much of a focus.

I have noticed that we 'offer' ,whatever that is and it seems to me just to be heads up for the kids since we all know that commitment is where it really is at. As to '21 and '22 there isn't much room at the inn.

I think that we may have a couple of scorers on this team, proven in D1, not too bad with two of them around 39% from the field and a couple others who I have to think are going emerge this year, My personal opinion.

Ratings are all being skewed by COVID protocols that limited exposure and analysis. So called experts are basically basing their rankings on what they might remember and saw from players a year and a half ago.

The summer BB season did not happen last year. Those experts make a lot of their judgements based on watching top players going against each other during the summer. HS BB did not play out as it usually does either. Many states had shortened seasons with players in masks. California just wrapped up their championships.

Summer analysis is now going on and the rankings will certainly be revised and adjusted. I trust in the very experienced and successful recruiters and evaluators on staff, including Coach Pitino. The criticism of Pitino’s recruiting at Minnesota was that he was unable to keep the 5 stars that came out of that state during his 8 years there.

Verbal Commits generally gives any player, especially foreigners, they are not familiar with 2 stars. I do not value ESPN rankings very much as they pass out 4 stars like candy. I put more value in Top 150 rankings with players that usually fall into the Top 50 lists as Blue Chips, a future star. All those rankings and lists will be far more accurate come the Fall.

Pitino recruits players he believes will allow themselves to be coached to their full potential with hard work from the player themselves. Every player he has brought in so far have alluded to that mantra, “I want to get better”. Time will tell us how good or bad Pitino is at evaluating talent, desire, and heart. It appears like he has put together a talented roster off of Zoom. I too, believe there are players on the current roster that are capable of putting up points at the D1 level of BB. Far to early to make a judgement on Pitino’s recruiting, in my opinion.

agree that its far to early to judge and that the *ratings are not a good barometer at this point - imo, not all that valuable ever but that's a different debate. I think especially for the 2022 and 2023, the * raters don't have a  clue and as usual will rely on seeing who is recruiting a kid and then adjust the rating accordingly.  Right now, we are jumping on prospects early which is probably smart and lets see over the next year-3 who else offers these prospects - to me who else is recruiting a kid is the most telling/accurate factor for we fans - just my $.02.

The reputable recruiting databases like 247Sports, Verbal Commits, ESPN, Rivals and other HS athlete recruiting formats "star rankings" are determined by actual recruiting analysts after countless hours of personal observations, film evaluation and the input provided from their network of Coaches, and though some here in the Lair that don't seem to trust the value of these rankings they are a valuable tool that the vast majority of collegiate coaches and recruiters value and utilize when recruiting athletes.

But ranking players is not a perfect science.

..As to '21 and '22 there isn't much room at the inn.

Not much room if you retain your players and they are developing at the level the coaching staff expects and with the transfer portal the way it is now, you may see kids looking ahead at who's in front of them at their position and thinking to themselves, "It is going to be tough to get more minutes if I stay here" and then heading out the door on a regular basis through the "time machine" (no sitting out a year) that is the transfer portal.
